Nigerian man sentenced to death in Vietnam for drug trafficking

A Nigerian man has been sentenced to death by a court in the southern Tay Ninh Province, Vietnam on Tuesday, March 2.

The 45-year-old Nigerian man named Ekwegbalu James Nzube was sentenced to death for trafficking nearly four kilograms of methamphetamine from Cambodia.

He said he got acquainted with another Nigerian, Jone, in China in 2014, and was hired him to transport drugs from Cambodia to Vietnam.

He visited Ho Chi Minh City in March before going to Cambodia to obtain the drugs and was paid $2,000 for delivery.

However, while crossing the border into Vietnam on July 2020, he was caught by border guards in Tay Ninh Province. After he was searched, immigration officials found four plastic bags with nearly four kg of meth.

In Vietnam, people convicted of possessing or smuggling more than 600 g of heroin or 2.5kg methamphetamine face death penalty.
